countryside, whereas it was merely mentioned occasionally; nor could he tell me the names of the affected villages, though they were only eight miles away. Finding that Kaliaganj was not a suitable place for my purpose, I pushed on to Churli, a large village eight miles away, near which several cases of the disease were known to exist. Crossing the Mahanadi near the police-station, I followed its west bank for some distance, and came on to a small tributary, the Bhoridanga, flowing into the main stream. Several villages on the road were visited, but had no cases of the disease ; and after proceeding about three miles I reached Nawabganj, a large, thriving village, which also had a clean bill of health. We report here the identification of polymorphism in a well-defined genetic locus among the Leishmania parasites causing the visceral and dermal manifestations, in a comparison of 15 post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis and 12 kala-azar patient isolates.
